Trump, as an outsider Republican, is having a difficult time gaining the support of a faction of his own party for many of his initiatives.  If Perot had been elected, like any 3rd party candidate, he wouldn't have had any native support in Congress.  He had a lot of good ideas, but he would have had to build support for everything he wanted to do.  Neither party would have wanted him to succeed, so I'm not sure just how much he'd have been able to accomplish under those circumstances.

I do not know too much about Ross Perot, unfortunately - but I did see the Perot-Clinton-Bush debate from 1992, and I was astonished by the weight and rationality of his arguments. Unfortunately, in the current political climate it is almost impossible for an independent candidate to win against the candidates from both parties. But personally, if I had been eligible to vote at the time and knew nothing about these three candidates, aside from how they showed themselves at the debate - then I would have voted for Perot without hesitation. Both Clinton and Bush were strong candidates, but Perot simply sounded like someone who does a lot of thinking and has a lot of real world experience, as opposed to a career politician who has forgotten what the world looks like outside their Hilton apartment.
