Did Canada really have to change the lyrics to "O Canada"

The song "O Canada" Is to respect all the people who have served the Canadian military.... or so people thought. In one part, the lyrics say "all thy sons command". Now the Canadian Parliament change the lyrics to O Canada. Now, it is "In all of us command". Was all this change nessasary?
