Oil is a fossil fuel

Debate Information

I don't think it is, and I have multiple facts that point to it being a renewable source of energy. Convince me otherwise.

Please learn basic information about things before talking nonsense and forming a strawman argument.

Your poll is "Does oil come from the fairy tale dinosaurs?" But that's not what fossil fuels refers to, crude oul being a product of plankton.

It is not renewable over any timeframe that matters to us, taking millions of years to accumulate.

Do you have any facts or hard conclusive evidence that supports this conclusion?

Let's assume you're right that it's renewable. Do you evidence that it can be renewed faster than we are using it? Or that other forms of energy production will never be as profitable? If not then whether it is renewable or not doesn't matter because the reasons for pursuing other forms of energy production will be unrelated.

Do you have any facts or evidence to support your claim? Or are you just blowing hot air? Because I’m pretty damn sure that fossil fuels (oil, gas, ect.) is not renewable.

Generally speaking, well known scientific explanations for a variety of things are supported by a wealth of studies, scientific investigation and information.

The reason you ask for evidence, isn’t for enlightment, or because you think there is no such evidence for anything he’s said: it’s a rhetorical ploy, and a very subtle way of you changing the burden of proof.

You assert, with no evidence, that everyone is wrong about everything. You don’t meet any sort of burden of proof for these outrageous claims. Yet when someone points out flaws in your position you demand evidence: when it’s provided you will either reject it as invalid, insubstantial or reject the source without reason.

In general, in any conversation: you implicitly demand that people who are arguing from a position of science you can find on page 1 of a google search prove all of physics from first principles: for no good reason, other than you’re lazy and dont want to appropriately defend your position and you’ve found the easiest way is to pretend as if other people haven’t defended theirs.

You are making a strawman, so we don't even have to get into whether the scientific consensus is right - we just have to get into "Do Erfisflat's claims about what the scientific consensus says match what the scientific consensus actually says or is he making a strawman?"

Basic definitions of how science states this works are easy to find, e.g. "Aquatic phytoplankton and zooplankton that died and sedimented in large quantities under anoxic conditions millions of years ago began forming petroleum and natural gas as a result of anaerobic decomposition. Over geological time this organic matter, mixed with mud, became buried under further heavy layers of inorganic sediment. The resulting high levels of heat and pressure caused the organic matter to chemically alter, first into a waxy material known as kerogen which is found in oil shales, and then with more heat into liquid and gaseous hydrocarbons in a process known as catagenesis." Not from dinosaur bones.

    Either

    a) You do not understand even the most basic details of the process of fossil fuel accumulation and do not know what you are even meant to be trying to rebutt, thus making any possible argument you could make laughable.

    or

    b) You purposely made an irrelevant strawman and are thus arguing in good faith and can be ignored.

You're an or a but either way it would be ridiculous to take anything you say based on your word when you've shown yourself untrustworthy.

So, as it stands, not one piece of conclusive evidence that oil is a fossil fuel. Just some "scientific" claims and ad hominem attacks. Last chance to persuade me.

Why would anyone bother to try and persuade you? I've already provided an inductively reasoned argument for why your opinion about fossil fuels is irrelevant.

Oil from dinosaurs is a conventional misconception, and is incorrect, but that does nothing for the OP. What evidence is there that oil is from plant matter fossils?

    Here is contradictory evidence:

    @Erfisflat ;

    Or, maybe, just maybe.

It's a fact. The oil in the Middle Hast been used since it was discovered, and with vehicles that require a huge amount of oil to run, makes the amount dwindle even faster.

Why do you think America invaded Iraq? To get the oil that was left.

But guess what? It's not renewable. Something that is renewable is infinite, like wind or solar power. Oil isn't infinite, that's the reality you seem to ignore (Like always)

Oil has been used: fact, I agree. It isn't dwindling, though, as Russian scientists have discovered, and the US is the world's leading consumer of oil.
