In any case, Barr is wrong. The lack of religion isn’t to blame for society’s ills. As we’ve said so many times before on this site, the least religious nations in the world tend to have lower rates of violence, more prosperity, better human rights, higher life expectancy, greater educational opportunities, and more freedom. (Read the book.)

Religion hasn’t fixed our problems. It’s exacerbated them, in part because followers are prone to irrational thinking. They’d rather preserve tradition than find a better approach to our problems.

Considering the record religion and church have made in human history, it seems to me that it is more fair to say that, rather, non-secularists are ones who have been systematically destroying hundreds societies, if anyone. Christianity, Islam, Socialism and Fascism together brought far more misery to human race over the last 1,000 years, than all other ideologies combined did throughout the whole history of mankind.

Declining religious values is a good thing, as those values are based not on cold logic, but on sweet dreams. We need more pragmatism and cold-hearted reason in our lives, and less fairy tales and emotional preachings.
