A living wage is beneficial for both the economy and people

Debate Information

I believe a living wage adjusted for the cost of living in each state would not only greatly improve the lives of workers since they will be able to more easily afford basic necessities, but a living wage will also benefit the economy because the average American will now have more cash to then buy goods from small businesses and corporations.

@MateosLozano ; A company can only afford to pay its workers in accordance with the bottom-line - productivity. If you're suggesting subsidizing workers pay with tax-money...that is socialism and will not be successful.

A "living wage" is a fairly loaded term. What does it entail exactly? One can survive without a wage for a very long time; there are homeless jobless people, for example, who have been in that state for decades and are still around.

You probably meant that it would be beneficial for every worker to have a wage that allows them to maintain a certain living standard: being able to rent an apartment, own a car, eat healthily, et cetera, right? In this case, I agree, it would be - but the devil is in the details. How do you suggest for it to be accomplished? If the answer is "through a government-enforced regulations", for example, then I am fairly sure that the benefits will be far outweighed by unintended negative consequences, as history has shown again and again and again.
