There is no evidence for a "soul" it just isn't real. The human mind functions because of many layers of emergence which all build up from the fundamental laws of physics, starting with sub-atomic particles and energy which are the building blocks of matter, which are the building blocks of chemical compounds, some of which are organic and themselves build proteins, which are the building blocks of cellular life, which is the building blocks of multi-cellular life, which form humans and animals, which are the building blocks of cultures and societies.

At every layer the underlying laws and principals yield a new set of laws and structures which can not be observed unless take as a whole. The concept of a soul is a wishful abstraction of ancient peoples too afraid of death to except a temporary and completely accidental existence.

Consider, where would the soul exist? Is it in the brain? The body? each individual cell? All of these things have problems which no religion based on the assumption of an eternal being can solve.

The theist is ironically, psychologically fragile. So much so that they would reject reality altogether and deny any notion of the transience of being. There is an underlying assumption when dealing with the concept of the soul of being outside the universe, and therefore not effected by it in any way that truly matters. This type of thinking is what leads "good moral Christians" to kill people in gods name, or deny climate change, or the reality of evolution, or anything else that threatens their god beliefs. It results in people voting for demagogues and giving up money to charlatans who seek only to take advantage of them.

If there was ever an advantage to religion, it has now long since expired and science and reason should be the foundation of our lives, not magical thinking that makes us comfortable with our living situation. Get over your grief, @RickeyD.

I have never given any thought to what happens after my death. As I see it, my brain just shuts down, and the movie called "life" I am watching now ends. That is it.

I think the reason you Christians are so stuck up on what happens after death is because your lives are extremely boring. By assuming those prudish morals and having to do the same boring religious rituals every day, taking everything very seriously because your religion does not allow for humor, etc. - you wash all colors out of your life and make it into a greyscale torment. The hope for something better after this life ends is the only thing that keeps you going at all.

Do not live your life in servitude; instead, make your life serve you. If you do that, then you will not need to partake in escapist behaviors and will be able to enjoy life here and now.
