Is Complexity A Valid Argument For Creationists?

Debate Information

Many creationists often use the complexity argument in their assertion that life was designed by a creator......" the human body is far too complex to have just happened by accident".

Also: "Complexity is the result of design".

The point is that, yes, complexity can be the result of design but, one point that creationists seem to conveniently overlook is that, complexity can also be the result of "accumulation over time".

For example, we can marvel at the vast and wondrous beauty of an underground cave full of giant stalagmites and stalactites. They weren't created, they were formed by minerals accumulating and bonding over a very long period of time...hundreds of thousands of years.

The same goes for life. Life developed over a very long period of time and here, we are talking of billions of years.

Is it not then, more valid to say that life is far too complex (and convoluted) to have been designed?

Complexity can arise in very simple systems. Have you heard of Conway's Game of Life? The rules are extremely basic, and you can learn them in a few seconds - yet the patterns arising from those rules are extremely sophisticated, and large-scale structures arise from the simplest initial conditions.

Our limited experience certainly does not allow us to evaluate the maximal possible complexity in the Universe given its age. We do observe evidence of rapidly increasing complexity on Earth over time, which supports the assumption that the observed complexity could have arisen naturally. It does not disprove some intelligent being's interference, but it makes it likely unnecessary.

Quite right, and it does disprove the creationists point of view that complexity can only come from creation.
