How should governments handle space colonization in the future?

Debate Information

While the current way many countries treat space works now this may not always be the case. Space colonies may not stay scientific forever. Eventually governments and company may want resources currently in space and not scientific colonies may develop. At some point the governments of the world will have to change there current treatment of the issue. Any ideas?

I would hope that the private companies get there first and claim most of the land for their own use. Then the governments will have a very hard time convincing the general population that that land truly must belong to the bureaucrats instead.

Otherwise, like most libertarians, I espouse homesteading principles: whoever first developed a chunk of land, whether on Earth or on an extraterrestrial object, gains control over it, and whoever maintains it in a reasonable way keeps control over it. There can be some debate over what is considered a developed chunk of land and what is not, and in those cases private arbitration courts should come in and resolve individual disputes.

There is plenty of undeveloped land even on Earth, let alone in the rest of the Solar system, let alone in the rest of the Milky Way galaxy, let alone in the rest of the Universe. Once we hit the point at which colonizing other star systems becomes viable, as well as building makeshift space stations everywhere - the question will become fairly obsolete, as anyone who can afford a cheap spaceship will be able to claim land virtually anywhere.

    colonize all planets.
  • Space colonization like terraforming mars making it liveable. Handling like funding it. They haven’t been able to get a person to mars yet though but microbes can survive and start multiplying on mars. Factory’s on mars can provide an atmosphere.

Terraforming an entire planet is not a realistic idea.

Location, location, location, build a planet by bringing raw materials to the artificial planet. the building outposts on planets is a practical goal, do not try and reshape a planet it’s not an effective way to navigate and live in a universe.

The number one threat earth has are meteor's, so having a place that can adjust its orbit no matter its location is essential in any long term commitment to the human race.
