Did Chris Rock deserve to be slapped?

Americans love watching celebrities fall from grace, and at the Oscars, Will Smith decided to belly dive from grace and he tried to take Chris Rock down with him. Mr Rock made an off color joke about Mr Smith's wife regarding her shaved head (she suffers from alopecia). It wasn't Chris's best joke, but it certainly was not bad enough to warrant Will Smith to walk onto the stage and slap Chris Rock.
