History is written by the victors... So while the dates and results of certain events are objectively verifiable, the narrative of what lead to the event itself is often biased in favor of the victors, not always but often, so one is always better served by doing personal research with multiple sources, domestic and foreign...

History is not accurate, nor complete. It's highly subjective and contrary to chemistry or biology for that matter. You have to be ready for people who disagree with you regarding history - because everyone has different perspectives.

There are two types of facts in history: constructed facts and indisputable facts. The indisputable facts are not open to revision due to their degree of certainty. The constructed facts, on the other hand, are merely deduced by a series of arguments and data - and they are certainly open to debate and revision.

As @Plaffelvohfen said, history is written by the victors. Think about it - after a battle, is the defeated in any position to say "That's not what happened."

I let’s talk about  Christopher Columbus ? We have a date named after him. Yet we have never told them the truth. That he was the most ruthless person that Spain had to send And he landed in the Caribbean within a year every Islands natives Had been raped every native woman and in with man killed and Every natural resource ripped from the Caribbean over 3.5 million mass Genocide , in 4 months Gone as of everything was  erased  and he never Touched what we called today the United States everyone who was teachs and  celebrates every yr. also Show me a picture of Christopher Columbus there isn’t one so the guy with white hair just a fictitious made up caricature of imagination And there is no photo of him ever he was just as bad as Hitler Then he left and took what supplies he had raped from the islands and barely made it back to Spain!! And that’s what we teach our children to celebrate!! The mass genocide and pilfered that went totally unknown. They only sent him because he was as they say  A pirate and very Expendable. 1 fact

And lastly Columbus was written by the ancestors of all the European nation’s lineage so no one is going to help out right  type of atrocities that their forefathers really do the 19th I book the United States a history of the republic for college history major emphasizes and argues issues controversies archaeologist biologist it’s just easier to retail the old familiar Columbus story  This man was much worse than the Vikings ever where Remember at that time everybody was just searching for gold Europe in the 1400s unlike the Norse African and  now remember Columbus America mostly glorifies Columbus  many aspects of Columbus remain a mystery from Italy  Columbus could not even the right Italian the book challenge of freedom Cody Columbus he was searching for the edge of the world Washington Irving credits a polarizing filter fable and didn’t even write a timebelieve he was Jewish I genies to Columbus is as evidence he was seeking Japan India The library of Congress sells countless images paying our lifetime and there’s a favorite T-shirt featuring the different faces of Columbus The fabrications about Isabella sending messengers galloping after Columbus calling her jewels for the expedition all enhancements humanizing Columbus here’s a passage from land of promise October 9  1492 Clements his own journal for real countless  Times that the whole crew wanted to basically take meet me and throat clinic Columbus overboard but he’s pretrade as brave wise and godly false entries of the Santa Maria Columbus was a true leader history of the United States all through the records and distances  Columbus was less for captain and the brothers who captain the Nina and the Pinta Columbus confided in a journal he wanted to keep the route to India a secret the Columbus introduces a phenomenal revolutionized race religions transform

The colonist Jeffery heart went even further to denigrate Columbus he was worthy and human history perhaps the most important Porten  in 1989 I think it was President George H Bush added Columbus as a role model and he said some like his example of monumental feeds Jeffery heart went on to denigrate and said he wasn’t even worthy to be in human history but they use Columbus to build character obviously and had no interest in telling truth  it was basically so the authors that write this authors of Americans for sale
Now what wasn’t brought up was that when Columbus voyages cost almost as much damage to Europe I did to the Americas crops animals ideas diseases began to cross the oceans regulate far-reaching impact of Columbus‘s findings European Christianity Catholic Church and encyclopedia puts it in Europe was virtually incapable of self criticism. Europe’s clergy made our first store and religious uniform of cognitive dissident Remember one likes to think of himself as a bad person but You can’t erase what has been done  so therefore Thomas Jefferson gives the first record it’s just reprehensible and all this information in the library of Congress there been many books written about it James W Lohan the author of the lies across America
Is the one that really took off flying nationalism minus optimism and of miss information and out right lies it’s an eye-opening that the first governor of Virginia
Colony and to be a president of United States  and the author of the constitution made sure that all of this was stored and what we now call the library of Congress a factual information of what  Columbus did pre-Caribbean did Haiti TheTurkish  i’m a history buff and I’m fortunately it didn’t enlighten me in the least at Simon and shelter  A publication if you ever want to look online at their website as an account of just about everything that I briefly describe this is just one subject that we teach our children  it’s not so much the omission but no ownership. this is just one person  and the impact that he had on America and the Europeans do too the bubonic plague that he brought back to Europe with the pigs and slaves it’s reprehensible that’s why it’s not  taught  to children  or anybody else unless you’re getting a doctorate in history and then it becomes pretty much Required reading. If you are  European you out right lie because as you said before the winners right history

"Why have my teachers lied to me all through high school about American history"

My understanding is that a forum is held in Texas, and from the story that I heard about, is that a group of individuals, decide what goes into a history book, and then those decisions, are apparently, what are printed into the history textbooks, that are distributed across the country.

But because of the Internet, and Social Media, that the Internet, and Social Media, have in sense, maybe have become their own creations of historically infused educational materials?

Being that there could be just as many individuals on line, while they are in class at the same time?

History is a matter of self interpretation.

You could have an adult, teaching family members about how they individually view history, with maybe a bit of a bias slant, from behind closed doors, at ones own residence?

You could have a teacher in a college classroom, who taught their class from the history textbook, that goes along with that specific history class for an unknown period of time, and then dedicate the rest of the class time, to how they individually view history from their perspective, thus getting two separate history points of view in the same class?

Again, history is a matter of self Interpretation.

"How Textbooks Are Chosen--and Who Makes the Decisions"

"Textbooks are influential in helping to determine what many teachers teach and, in turn, what your children learn. Some courses are practically planned around the contents of their textbooks.

Because textbooks play such a big part in your child's education, you should know how and why certain titles are chosen and others are discarded, and who makes these decisions."

"For grades one through eight, most of the selection occurs at the state level by the State Board of Education, assisted by committees of volunteers who specialize in each discipline. Frequently, the board will select several texts for the same subject and grade level, and individual school districts choose from this list.

The state board's selection process can take as long as a year. First, the board adopts a framework for each discipline, which states the goals, minimum standards and content that must be covered in each course."

"Then a committee of volunteers is appointed to review and select the textbooks.

The size of the committees varies, but at least 55% of the members must be classroom teachers. The others usually have professional backgrounds related to the subject area.

The book selection process covers only one subject area each year. Last year, it was history and social sciences. This year it is foreign language texts. Next year, new science books will be found.

The lists of eligible books are good for eight years. This sometimes creates problems because some disciplines--the sciences, for example--can experience a lot of change in eight years, and a seven-year-old textbook can be out-of-date."

"State officials have realized this. Beginning in 1993, the lists of eligible textbooks will be open for changes every two years.

Local schools can petition for permission to use textbooks that do not appear on the official lists."

A historical figure is always complex. Columbus was a ruthless person by modern standards, and he has done horrible things to natives - but that is not all there is to him, and you must view his actions in the historical context. Bear in mind that, at the time, Europeans viewed the foreign natives as little more than wild animals, and, say, in the eyes of Columbus killing a native would seem similar to hunting a deer or fishing.

One of the most popular historical figures in the US of 70-s was Che Guevara. He personally rounded up and executed people the Cuban regime disliked - but that is not the part of his character that was venerated. It was, rather, his ability to stand up against a powerful government and win a war against it. He was not a symbol of executions; he was a symbol of the importance of one person, of one's ability to change the world by acting according to their convictions, whatever those convictions may be.

A certain qualitative assessment of a historical figure is not in itself a lie or not a lie, it is just an opinion. You may disagree with your teachers' opinions (I certainly did with mine's), but that does not make them into lies.

It becomes more and more apparent each year that Columbus did NOT "discover America". I think the history books will eventually be changed. As far as his "inhumanity", it was the "way of life" at that time and we should worry more about the "ways of life" we have today.

Columbus actually failed in his mission to find a route to the Far East, but, he earned his mention in the history books. We should worry more about if there will be anyone around to write OUR history, rather than the atrocities he committed. History we should "remember", the future is what we should worry about.

Slightly obsessive eh?  Any relevant points to make?
" Adversus absurdum, contumaciter ac ridens! "
  • @YUpeeping777 ;

There is truth, there is not whole truth. A child is not to be God’s witness at a trial while attending school. The idea of education should be the searcher to better oneself, the quest for nothing but truth is the requirement of litigation.

A child practicality learns to understand it is not only hard to tie a shoe without fingers from carless chopping of cherry tree to giver reason to state truth, a shoe that has no lace and this presents a whole different obstacle to practicality.

my questions are why is the truth Construed and vague approach to learning  rather than factual information?
In whole truth it is Christopher  Columbus who created the united state which directed all parties to converge on the Territories which become the United States of America. The achievement of the creation of collaboration which h took place did not have to be intentional by his efforts.

@YUpeeping777 Yes they do. Because, the state government, at least in the us, uses history classes as a propaganda machine to create drones. Not to discuss and debate and think critically about the issues that history has told and taught us, but to just create drones that will go out and live obedient lives as good little citizens. Also, again at least in the us, a lot of history teachers don't even have a history degree, they just teach what the state tells them to teach.
