For the love of money is the root of all evil (1 Timothy 6:10) goes the ancient saying.
But could it be that religion is the root of all evil?
Sure, money has occasioned much greed and been the motivation of much crime yet it is a necessity of life in that it is a token of our wealth and enables us to enhance our lives and the lives of others.
Religion, on the hand, is not a necessity of life yet for any good that it is perceived to bring about it has been responsible for more war, hatred, jealousy, fear and guilt than anything else ever devised by mankind.
So, if we don't need religion, why can't we simply do without it?
