I realise this is a bit of an oxymoron and a bit of a gruesome subject, nevertheless it is something that mankind imposes upon itself.
The USA surely must take the wrap for making an artform out of execution then turning it into a media circus. And the methods were as morbid and as cruel as the crimes committed by the condemned. Lest we forget the electric chair where it often took several attempts to terminate a life whilst slowly cooking the subject. Then there was the gas chamber, so elaborately devised yet its effectiveness and cruelty were brought into question with each execution. There have even been some notable bungles with administering lethal injections.
I suppose the Americans were keen to show off technology and move away from the primitive practice of hanging. When Saddam Hussein's half-brother was hanged (rather haphazardly and without proper consideration for his obesity) he really did become a "half" brother immediately following the release of the trapdoor, if you know what I mean.
Yet, didn't the French come up with a doozy during the Revolutio?...The guillotine; clean, efficient, fast and presumably humane. The last prisoner to be lawfully guillotined was Hamida Djandoubi in 1977. Just take a look at the guy; he looks like a suave, hip, snappy dresser being escorted to a night club.
I would never support capital punishment but surely, especially in the USA where firearms reign supreme, wouldn't a simple shot to the head suffice?
