Is Christian Nationalism The Single Biggest Threat To America's Religious Freedom?

Debate Information

Certainly.  Christian nationalism is antithetical to the constitutional ideal that belonging in American society is not predicated on what faith one practices or whether someone is religious at all.  It promotes the false narrative that to be a true American one must be Christian.

The best way to combat Christian nationalism is to recommit to foundational ideas of religious freedom for all - principles such as:

  • People of all faiths and none have the right and responsibility to engage constructively in the public square.
  • One’s religious affiliation, or lack thereof, should be irrelevant to one’s standing in the civic community.
  • Government should not prefer one religion over another or religion over nonreligion.
  • Religious instruction is best left to our houses of worship and other religious institutions.

Should we take "in god we trust" off our money? I think so but then again we may be a cashless society before too long.

Seems to me 'freedom of religion...' includes the right to be free from religion, free of religion.

The biggest threat to religious freedom in the US is without a doubt, leftism.  Let's not forget that it was the Democrat National Party, who at their convention,  literally booed God - twice.  It is  Democrats who have fought to shut down religious schools:  It is Democrats in left leaning state who tried to keep churches closed during COVID - violating the constitution.  It is Democrats who have been found to have violated people's religious rights over and over and over and over again at the Supreme Court.    Here is just a few of the hundreds of instances:

    1) In Pierce v. Society of Sisters (1925) Supreme court case, it was the state of Oregon who tried to outlaw religious private schools and demand that only state schools be allowed.  The good guys prevailed and religious schools can exist today as a result of that verdict.

    2) In June of 2022 the Supreme court said that Maine's ban on aid to religious schools was unconstitutional.  Leftists governments have often targeted religious institutions for discrimination

    3) In June 2020, the U.S. Supreme Court threw out the Montana Supreme Court’s decision. by a vote of 5-4, the justices ruled in Espinoza v. Montana Department of Revenue that the state court’s interpretation of the Montana constitution violated the U.S. Constitution, which protects the free exercise of religion in another religious school case.

    4) In Burwell v. Hobby Lobby Stores the Supreme Court defended religious freedom against those who wanted to force Hobby Lobby to have to provide pre-born baby killing drugs against their religious beliefs.

    5) in 2020, SCOTUS ruled in Fulton v. City of Philadelphia that the refusal of Philadelphia to contract with Catholic Social Services (CSS) for the provision of foster care services unless CSS agrees to certify same-sex couples as foster parents violates the Free Exercise Clause of the First Amendment.

    6) In 2022, SCOTUS ruled against leftism when it said in Kennedy v. Bremerton School District that a coach could pray with his team after a game.

    7) In 2017, the immoral left, lost the Supreme Court case of Masterpiece Cakeshop, Ltd. v. Colorado Civil Rights Commission when a gay couple tried to force a religious cake baker to make a cake to celebrate a union that the baker's religious says is sin.

Now, I could go on all day citing court cases - like the Cleveland Schools case where Democrats tried to stop the first school choice program in the nation because religious schools were participating.  Each of these cases show you how leftists are trying to stop and silence religious freedoms.  White nationalism is more of a boogie man.  It is a small group and certainly not as large and dangerous as leftism is to religious freedom.

In socialist/communist countries you always see a lack of religious freedom.  For example in Cuba, new church buildings are not allowed.  If you are a person of faith, you are not allowed to hold government jobs.

Everyday we hear stories of where leftist colleges attack Jewish students, or refuse to recognize Christian clubs, or deny professors religious rights in racist and anti-religious DEI programs.  The real danger to religious freedom in the US is the left.

Booing at the Democratic National Convention: While booing during a political convention might be seen as disrespectful, it doesn't equate to an attack on religious freedom. It reflects disagreement with a specific mention of God within a political context, not a broader opposition to religious beliefs.

Shutting down religious schools: Instances of regulations or legal battles involving religious schools often concern issues like curriculum standards, teacher qualifications, or compliance with anti-discrimination laws, not a direct attempt to shut them down solely due to their religious affiliation.

Church closures during COVID: Pandemic-related restrictions aimed to protect public health and slow the spread of the virus. These measures are often applied to various public gatherings and events, including religious services, not solely targeting religious institutions. The legality and constitutionality of such restrictions were debated and reviewed in court cases.

Supreme Court rulings: Supreme Court decisions on religious freedom involve complex legal considerations and often involve balancing competing rights and interests. It's important to analyze each case individually and avoid generalizations about one side consistently violating religious rights.

Are you sure that you are not maxx in disguise?       Maxx'xs favorite tactic is to take anything I say, and then put the most extreme spin on it, and then demand that I explain why I am so extreme.     What i wrote is a statement of fact.     Hitler regarded Bolshevism s a Jewish invention because so many leading Bolsheviks were Jews.     In Germany when Hitler came to power, one of the two main Communist Party leaders was a female Jew.      Stalin sent two Russian communist Jews to Bavaria, Hitler's home state, to stir up trouble in Bavaria.

It has been reported on Youtube that 70% of US Jews vote Democrat.    Which is pretty funny, when you realise that Democrats are infested with Israel hating leftists.    Generally speaking, right wing people support Israel.    The only exceptions being what jack could correctly call "the far right", who's opposition to anything Jewish is traditional.     But what we are seeing today, is that it is mainstream Democrat votes who are the most vehemently anti Israel.   And it is hard to be anti Israel without being anti Jewish.     Although, the Left tries to pretend that it can have that distinction.      jack is an interesting case.      He is obviously very left wing, but he claims that he is Jewish.   So, his politics are that of a person who advocates for the majority of people who despise him for his religious affiliation.   Looks nuts to me?

There are a number of areas where you can see that leftists have attacked people of faith recently.  For example Biden's DOE has discriminated against faith based school groups, by either refusing to look into claims of discrimination, or in looking the other way when schools denied religious groups equal access and free speech rights.  Republicans responded to Biden's war on religious school groups by pushing the Equal Access /Campus Act.

Leftists have tried to deny churches from the right of free assembly during COVID.  They sought to deny religious groups to be able to provide adoptions for children.  They sought to deny children the opportunity to go to religious schools in voucher programs.  They targeted Christian businesses like Hobby Lobby, Chick-fil-a and bakeries and wedding photographers demanding that they abandon their religious principles and beliefs.  Biden has announced that he will continue to deploy the DOJ to target Christian and religious groups just for being religious.  From Fox News:

in 2021, the Biden administration released a memo instructing the Department of Justice to go after concerned parents at school board meetings after receiving a letter that compared these parents to "domestic terrorists." Last year, it was also revealed that the FBI mounted a spying program on traditional Catholics (particularly those interested in the Latin Mass) and identified them as individuals who might be part of the "far-right nationalist movement."

The Biden administration asked for no leniency for a group of pro-life protesters who sat in an abortion clinic and prayed.  They may be sentenced up to 11 years, in prison, while lots of BLM RIOTERS had their crimes dismissed WITHOUT PROSECUTION.

The left has targeted religious schools, businesses, clubs, and even churches and synagogues.  It would be dishonest to claim otherwise.

Without Christianity, there would be no America as America was ordained by Elohim as a progenitor of the Gospel and the Great Commission and without the overwhelming majority of American citizens honoring Jesus as Lord as led by the indwelling Holy Spirit, America's Constitutional Republic will die in atheism, secularism.

Our Founder's desired to maximize personal freedoms and limit governmental intercession in personal lives; therefore, our Founder's relied heavily upon the citizenry being "born again" by faith in Jesus and the Holy Spirit as the indwelling arbiter of the human conscience thereby thwarting unrestrained narcissism through the production of the "fruits of the Spirit" (Galatians 5:22-23); otherwise, there would be insufficient numbers of police, prosecutors, judges, jails, to maintain law and order in our experimental "Constitutional Republic."

America's freedoms and the "way of life" envisioned by our Founder's cannot manifest in a Nation where the populous serves Satan through atheism, secular humanism, progressivism, socialism, Darwinism, abortion, LGBTQ perversion, open borders, attacks on law enforcement and the rule of law.

If you are an atheist, secular humanist, Darwinist, Evolutionist...YOU DO NOT BELONG IN THE UNITED STATES AS YOU ARE AN ENEMY OF WHAT IS SUSTAINABLE NORMS, MORES, VALUES....GET OUT!

@Factfinder ; It was the Christians who fought to end slavery...you should know this.

In June 1783 a petition from the London Yearly Meeting and signed by over 300 Quakers was presented to Parliament protesting the slave trade. In 1787 the Society for Effecting the Abolition of the Slave Trade was formed, with 9 of the 12 founder members being Quakers.

I disagree with the assertion that my personal worldview, whether atheist, secular humanist, or anything else, makes me incompatible with being American.  The United States is a nation built on the principles of freedom of religion, freedom of speech, and the right to hold diverse beliefs. These are core American values that I, and I believe most Americans, cherish. While we may differ in our personal beliefs, we can still share a common ground based on these fundamental values.

The statement that people with certain beliefs are not 'sustainable norms' is not only inaccurate but also harmful. It perpetuates harmful stereotypes and creates unnecessary division. People of various backgrounds and beliefs contribute positively to American society in countless ways.

The vast majority of Americans value diversity and respect the right of individuals to hold their own beliefs, regardless of their religious or non-religious affiliations.  If you are unhappy, maybe YOU should get out.

@Factfinder ; @JulesKorngold ; @MayCaesar ; @ZeusAres42 Christians don't advocate for the murder of babies. Simply because someone falsely believes they're a Christian due their family or church attendance or other affiliations does, in no way, suggest they're a Christian. Jesus said, "You will know them by their fruit" (Matthew 7:15-20).

    Jesus said,

15 “Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep's clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves. 16 You will recognize them by their fruits. Are grapes gathered from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? 17 So, every healthy tree bears good fruit, but the diseased tree bears bad fruit. 18 A healthy tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a diseased tree bear good fruit. 19 Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. 20 Thus you will recognize them by their fruits.

    I Never Knew You

21 “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. 22 On that day many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?’ 23 And then will I declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.’  Matthew 7:21-23 (ESV)

The persecution of witches reached its zenith at a time when Christianity's attitudes against sex had long since turned into full-blown misogyny.

Confessing Witches Under Torture Accused Witches Would Confess to Almost Anything

@Factfinder ; Those who participated in anything of this nature were NOT Christians nor did they follow Christian doctrine.

    Excerpt,

A dark period in early American history, the Salem witch trials were a series of hearings and trials to prosecute people accused of witchcraft in the counties of Essex, Suffolk, and Middlesex, Massachusetts, between February 1692 and May 1693. Hundreds of people were arrested, imprisoned, and tried for the crime of witchcraft, and nineteen of them were hanged. One was crushed under heavy stones, and at least five more died in prison. Numerous social, religious, psychological, and political reasons have been put forth as contributing factors to the bizarre events, but one thing is certain: the Salem Witch Trials were not biblical from a number of perspectives.

Some proponents of this kind of action have pointed to Old Testament commands like Exodus 22:18, “Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live,” or Leviticus 20:27, “A man also or woman that hath a familiar spirit, or is a wizard, shall surely be put to death,” as justification for the trials. They would say that, since God commanded death for anyone found guilty, then we are obligated to carry out those commands today. If that were the case, then we would have difficulty understanding what happened in Acts 19:19. As Paul ministered in Ephesus, many who had practiced witchcraft brought their books and burned them, confessing their sinful deeds. Instead of stoning these people, Paul welcomed them when they confessed and repented of their sins. Likewise, Simon the Sorcerer in Acts 8:9 was not stoned, but was rebuked by Peter.

Why didn’t Peter and Paul obey God’s commands from the Old Testament? First of all, the Law was given to the nation of Israel as the basis of a theocracy. Israel was the only nation in all of history to legally and politically come under the direct authority of God. He did not originally establish a king to rule over them but declared Himself to be their only true king (1 Samuel 10:19). By the time of Jesus and the apostles, Israel was no longer a sovereign nation and could no longer carry out all of the laws God had given them. When Jesus was presented for crucifixion before Pilate, the Jewish leaders had to get permission from the Roman governor to carry out their plans. Second, in this church age, we are no longer under the Law but under grace (Romans 6:14). This doesn’t give an excuse to sin, but it does open the door of mercy to anyone who will confess and forsake his sin, no matter how grievous that sin is.

Another reason the Salem witch trials were unbiblical is the manner in which they were carried out. The historical accounts of the trials make it pretty clear that most of the accused were really the victims of mass hysteria, petty jealousy, or gossip. Little evidence was produced to verify the charges leveled, and that which was produced was hearsay or circumstantial. In most cases it was one person’s word against another, and once the charge was made, the victim’s word was rejected. Those responsible for the trials were in most cases probably guiltier of sin than those who were accused. Lies, gossip, and slander were the rule of the day, and God was certainly not honored in anything that was done there. First Corinthians 13:4–7 stands as an indictment on those who carried out the Salem witch trials, showing that they did not have the love of God within them.

The 'not real Christian' defense doesn't work. They were people like you and Hitler, that professed Christianity and believed they were doing gods work.

@Factfinder ;  Only the historically ignorant suggest Hitler was a Christian.

Hitler followed his father’s religious path straight into infamy. He hated Judaism, gleefully murdering 6 million Jews. But he loathed Christianity, too.

“In Hitler’s eyes Christianity was a religion fit only for slaves,” wrote Alan Bullock “Hitler, A Study in Tyranny,” a seminal biography. “Its teaching, he declared, was a rebellion against the natural law of selection by struggle of the fittest.”

“During middle school,” Redlich wrote in “Hitler: Diagnosis of a Destructive Prophet,” the young pupil “made the life of his teacher of religion, Father Salo Schwarz, miserable” by adhering “to his father’s view that religion was for the and old women.”

“I had a particular liking for the delicate subjects in the Bible,” he said, “and I took a naughty pleasure in asking embarrassing questions.”

Bullock, in describing Hitler as a “rationalist and materialist,” quotes him in a wartime conversation with aides as saying:

The dogma of Christianity gets worn away before the advances of science ... Gradually the myths crumble. All that is left to prove that nature there is no frontier between the organic and inorganic. When understanding of the universe has become widespread, when the majority of men know that the stars are not sources of light, but worlds, perhaps inhabited worlds like ours, then the Christian doctrine will be convicted of absurdity.

I submit the continually willful ignorant believe hitler was an atheist so they don't have to confront the fact reality doesn't line up with their fairy god book.

His profession of faith and delusional obedience to gods word inspired him. That's a fact whether you like it or not. He believed he was doing gods work just like you do...

The god that inspired Hitler is the god that inspires you to seek death in Hell, Satan.

Hitler hated Catholicism and used same as a control over the masses and Catholicism is NOT Christianity BTW.

N 1930 and 1931 the Catholic bishops of Germany issued warnings against the rising National Socialist Party. The essence of what they said was that the party program placed a Germanic feeling of race above religion. Different bishops published these warnings in different terms of sharpness -- a few omitted them altogether. The influence of these episcopal admonitions must not be exaggerated. https://www.foreignaffairs.com/germany/hitlers-undeclared-war-catholic-church

A powerful account of Hitler’s effort to destroy the Polish Catholic Church

This means that in twentieth-century European history, German-occupied west-central Poland was, alongside the excesses of the Spanish Civil War and Stalinist regimes in various East European countries (the cruelest of which was Hoxha’s Albania), the bloodiest episode of the martyrdom of Catholic clergy.

Drawing on quantitative and qualitative research in Polish, German, and English from both archives and secondary sources, Huener does not limit his study to solely documenting the killings of Polish priests, most of which happened in the Dachau concentration camp. The murder of well over a thousand priests from across Europe (the overwhelming majority of whom were Poles) has already been chronicled in two other excellent books, the Luxembourgish priest Jean Bernard’s memoir Priestblock 25487 and Guillame Zeller’s The Priest Barracks: Dachau, 1938-1945, as well as in German filmmaker Volker Schlöndorff’s fine drama The Ninth Day. Huener does devote a chapter to chronicling the martyrdom of Polish priests in Dachau, but he also discusses the social implications of these policies and other repressive measures.

Apart from the incarceration and killing of priests, the German authorities made access to the sacraments extremely difficult for Poles in the Warthegau. Mass could be celebrated only between the hours of 9:00 and 11:00 on Sundays, while 97 (sic!) percent of Polish parishes were closed; many were converted into secular purposes, such as warehouses or prisons for Jews about to be deported to camps.  https://www.catholicworldreport.com/2021/07/07/a-powerful-account-of-hitlers-effort-to-destroy-the-polish-catholic-church/
