It is a little confusing and part of that is because the more grey area there is the more both sides can get away with. For instance there probably are some war crimes being committed by individuals within the Israeli ranks. No excuse for that; though they are always under constant threat of a another Oct .7. And that's where the majority of blame goes. Israel has lived under constant threat of the antisemitic nations that surround her.

The long and the short of it is Palestine was never a country but a region. Large patches of desert with little or no natural resources. Mostly nomadic peoples that consisted of Palestinians, Jews, and other Arabs. There were authoritative regimes over the centuries that governed in different ways until the Brits took it over. They tried to install a two state system which the Jews accepted in 1947 but the Palestinians and their Arab brothers rejected. While this political situation was going on the Israelis were figuring out how to craft and sell certain items handy in desert climates. And they began looking at desalination and the possibilities of creating a technique to operate plants on a large scale. Well, there was a little conflict called ww2 in 1939 so things got somewhat hairy. Then after the war in 1948 and many negotiations, the UN led by the U.S. established the state of Israel.

Soon after the Arab states launched an attack which flopped. But it left mostly Palestinians displaced. Even more so in 1967 when the Arabs attacked again and lost. Every since then Arabs and sympathetic far left political types have been using the Palestinian people as pawns, also Arabs mind you, as a means to attack Israel in every way imaginable. Meantime Israel has dealt with that and dang near perfected desalination plants which has made them prosper in the desert.

One thing that you may not be aware of, Fact finder. Around 1967, the European Left did in fact support Israel. This was because Israel conformed to the usual Leftist "Oppressor/ Oppressed" narrative, which is the only way that these lunatics can make sense of the world.

In 1967, Israel was a nation of only 2 million people surrounded by 500 million Mudlim Arabs obsessed with the idea of wiping Israel, and the 2 million Jews who lived there, right off the map

Add to that the Holocaust, and the Left was firmly on the side of Israel. In 1967, the Arab armies were lavishly equipped with.every type of the most modern Soviet fighters, bombers, tanks, armoured vehicles, and artillery. Military commentators of the time were totally convinced that when the 1967 war came, Israel had no hope whatsoever repelling the attack that the Arabs were bragging about winning.

Of course, things did not work out as planned by the Arab armies. But even after 1967, the Europen Left continued to support Israel. One reason for that was the Israeli " kibbutz" system of communal farms. These were in fact socialist style communal farms and the Israelis, with their strong social cohesion, had actually made to work. Leftists finally had an example of how socialist style farming could really work. For the next 6 years, you just could not claim to be a fashionable lefty unless you could brag about working on an Israeli kibbutz

Then came the 1973 war which was a close run thing. But once again, mainly by the self sacrifice of the very thin screen of Israeli soldiers on duty during Yom Kippur, to sacrifice their lives to prevent another holocaust of Israeli people, the Israelis won again.

That was when the European Left switched sides. Lefties love losers and they hate winners. The Israelis had done the one thing that the Left would not tolerate

That was when the Arabs became the " oppressed" and the Israelis became the " oppressors."
